BARK U + Trupanion Pet Insurance Partnership
At BARK U, responsible dog ownership is not optional — it’s foundational.
We love when our clients are proactive, informed, and financially prepared pet owners. Loving your dog means more than enrichment and socialization. It means preparation.
Responsible Ownership Starts Here
Our standards for BARK U families include:
Investing in training and proper socialization.
Maintaining routine veterinary care.
Being financially prepared for unexpected medical needs
Dogs live active, social lives. They run hard. They play big. They explore the world fully. And even in the safest environments — at home, at the park, or during play — unexpected injuries and illnesses can happen.
Being prepared for that possibility is part of responsible ownership.
🩵 Why We Believe in Pet Insurance
As professionals who work with dogs every single day, we have seen how quickly veterinary costs can arise — even from minor incidents. We never want a BARK U family to hesitate in a moment of urgency.
Pet insurance allows you to confidently say “yes” to care — immediately — without financial second guessing. This isn’t just about your time at BARK U. It’s about protecting your dog for their entire life.
Not sure if pet insurance is worth it? Ask yourself these 3 questions:
Is pet insurance really a necessary expense?
It’s a common question, and a fair one! Many responsible pet owners feel this way at first.
Pet insurance isn’t about assuming something will happen to your dog — it’s about being prepared if it does. Accidents, injuries, and illnesses can happen to even the healthiest pups, and treatment can quickly become expensive.
Responsible pet ownership means planning not only for everyday needs like food, grooming, and checkups, but also for the unexpected. Insurance helps ensure that if your pup ever needs unexpected or serious care, decisions can be based on what’s best for them — not just what’s affordable at the moment.
Your dog depends on you for their health and well-being, and being prepared is one more way to give them the care they deserve.
If your pup needed emergency care tomorrow, would a $3,000–$8,000 vet bill cause stress?
Accidents and illnesses can happen when we least expect them. Insurance exists to protect you from those large, unexpected costs so the focus can stay on getting your pup the care they need.
Do you want to proactively protect your pup’s future health?
The earlier coverage starts, the more protection your pup can have in place before potential problems arise.
That’s why many BARK U clients take advantage of the 30-day trial offer — giving themselves time to learn how coverage works and decide if it’s a good fit for their family.
Sometimes the best way to know if something is right for you is simply to try it!

What if my dog recently had a vet exam? Does my dog need to go again in order to activate the BARK U x Trupanion Exam Offer?
To receive the exclusive benefit of waived waiting periods and immediate coverage, a basic vet exam must be completed just prior to activating your offer.
If your pup recently had an exam, your veterinarian will simply need to perform another basic exam before activation. This ensures your coverage starts right away with no delays.
What kind of exam is needed?
Your pup only needs a basic “nose to tail” wellness exam from your vet prior to activating the Exam Offer. No extended tests or bloodwork needed. Since one of the amazing benefits of your exclusive BARK U Offer is the immediate coverage, the exam establishes that there are no obvious signs of your pup being sick or injured prior to activating the offer.
Even if your vet does note a specific issue, you can still activate the coverage; however, the noted condition may be considered pre-existing and not covered by the policy.
NOTE: An approved exam means an exam by a licensed DVM (Vet technicians would not qualify), and the assumption is that the medical records for that exam will be kept on file by the vet.
What if my dog fails their exam?
No pup will ever be denied the opportunity for coverage with Trupanion for any reason other than if it is older than 14 years at the time of activation. Coverage is only available if the policy is started prior to a pup’s 14th birthday. If any physical ailment is noted during the exam, that issue may be considered pre-existing and ineligible for coverage; however, the pup will still be eligible for a policy, and all other new conditions would be covered.
How do I enroll for the 30-day trial?
After your dog’s most recent vet appointment, call 833-414-0176 and reference the exclusive code for BARK U clients: BRX1BU26.
You can also register online at trupanion.com. Click ‘Start Offer’, select ‘Vet Offer’ and then fill in your details. For ‘adoption date’, be sure to enter your dog’s exam date/vet visit date.
What isn’t covered under the Exam Offer?
Like most pet insurance policies, Trupanion does not cover:
- Pre-existing conditions (anything showing signs or symptoms before activation)
- Exam fees or consultation fees
- Preventative or wellness care (vaccines, flea/tick prevention, routine dental cleanings, etc.)
Do I need to put a credit card on file to activate my Exam Offer?
No credit card is required to activate your free 30-day trial.
If you’d like your coverage to automatically continue after the trial, you can add a payment method — but it’s completely optional. There is no risk to activating your offer.
NOTE: When calling in, you will never be obligated to give credit card information in order to activate the Exam Day offer. You may be asked if you would like to put one on file by the Trupanion care team, but there no pressure to do so.
What happens if my pup has an accident or illness during the 30-day trial?
If your pup needs veterinary care during your trial:
- Visit any licensed veterinarian, clinic or emergency vet hospital
- Pay for the visit
- Submit a claim through your Trupanion online portal for reimbursement
If your veterinarian is a Trupanion Vet Direct Pay partner, Trupanion can pay the vet directly for their portion — meaning you would only pay your share at checkout.
Trupanion is currently the only pet insurance provider that offers direct payment to participating veterinary hospitals.
An overview of the coverage included can be found here.
More information on an example of costs and Trupanion support can be found here.
What happens after the free 30-day trial?
You can choose to continue coverage at any time during your 30-day trial — or even when you first activate.
No matter when you decide, your first month is completely free. You’ll receive reminder emails from Trupanion as your trial period comes to an end, so nothing catches you off guard.
If you do not want to continue coverage after 30 days, no further action is needed. Your 30-day trial will simply end, along with your pup’s coverage.
If you choose to continue with coverage, you can follow the step-by-step directions provided in the Trupanion emails for adding a payment to your account.
How much does a Trupanion policy cost?
As a BARK U client using the Exam Offer, your first 30 days are completely free.
If you’d like to explore what your monthly premium would be after the trial, you can:
- Call Trupanion’s Customer Care team at 833-414-0176
- Visit www.trupanion.com and click “Get a Quote”
Pricing is personalized and based on:
- Your chosen deductible (anywhere from $0–$1,000)
- Your pup’s age, breed, and gender
- Your zip code (local veterinary costs vary)
Choosing a higher deductible can lower your monthly premium — but coverage itself does not change. Every plan provides the same comprehensive protection.
Will my monthly price increase every year?
Monthly premiums may adjust over time — but only if the cost of veterinary care increases in your area.
Unlike many other companies, Trupanion:
- Does not use “birthday pricing” (your pet aging does not automatically increase your premium)
- Will never raise your price due to the number of claims you submit
- Will never cancel coverage because you’ve used your policy
Starting coverage when your pup is young often means the lowest starting premiums and fewer pre-existing exclusions.
What if I complete the Exam Day but miss the activation window?
If you complete an exam but miss the activation window, in order to take advantage of the 30-day, no cost and immediate coverage that BARK U Offers, you would need to have another exam performed prior to activating the offer.
