At BARK U, we’re passionate about creating opportunities for dogs to make a meaningful difference in the world. That’s why our trainers launched BARK Uplift, a nonprofit initiative focused on training facility dogs to provide comfort, support, and assistance to those in need.

What are Facility Dogs?

Facility dogs are specially trained dogs that work alongside professionals in structured environments to provide emotional and physical support to individuals or groups. Unlike service dogs, who are trained to assist a single individual with specific needs, facility dogs are skilled at helping multiple people in settings like schools, hospitals, or courtrooms. Their calming presence and specialized training make them invaluable in promoting wellness, reducing stress, and fostering connection.

The Role of Facility Dogs

Facility dogs can make an incredible impact in a variety of environments, including:

  • Schools: Facility dogs help students regulate emotions, improve focus, and create a more positive learning environment. They’re particularly helpful in supporting children with special needs or those who face challenges with anxiety and socialization.
  • Hospitals: Facility dogs provide comfort and distraction for patients undergoing medical treatments, reducing stress and boosting morale for both patients and healthcare staff.
  • Therapy Centers: These dogs play a vital role in physical and occupational therapy, encouraging participation in exercises and helping clients meet therapeutic goals.
  • Courtrooms: Facility dogs support individuals involved in legal proceedings, especially children, by providing emotional stability during stressful situations.

How BARK Uplift Trains & Works with Facility Dogs

The team at BARK Uplift—led by the same skilled trainers who power BARK U—is beginning the journey of finding and preparing facility dogs for their unique roles. Here’s how it works:

  1. Careful Selection:
At BARK Uplift, selecting the right dogs for our program is a critical step. Facility dogs must have the ideal temperament—calm, friendly, and adaptable to a variety of environments. Any dog that we will be welcoming into our program must pass a strict temperament assessment to qualify. To ensure we’re working with dogs that are well-suited to this important role, our trainers have built a trusted network of service dog breeders from whom we assess and select potential facility dogs.

In addition to breeders, we are always on the lookout for dogs that may already be available. If a dog from our Adoptables program demonstrates the temperament and qualities required to excel as a facility dog, we will adopt them into the BARK Uplift program. Occasionally, we also evaluate dogs from rescues or shelters, ensuring they meet the standards necessary for this specialized work.

By working with diverse sources, we aim to find facility dogs that can make a meaningful impact in schools, hospitals, therapy centers, and other environments.

Comprehensive Training: Dogs at BARK Uplift undergo rigorous and highly specialized training that goes far beyond standard obedience training. While typical dog training focuses on foundational skills like sit, stay, and recall, the training for facility dogs is tailored to prepare them for specific tasks and roles in therapy, education, or service settings.

These dogs are guided through a series of advanced programs designed to turn them into experts in their field. They start with foundational obedience and socialization training, but their journey doesn’t stop there. To move forward in the program, each dog must pass a multitude of rigorous assessments, including:

  • Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Certification: A nationally recognized test that evaluates a dog’s manners and behavior in real-world scenarios.
  • Therapy Dog Certification: This ensures the dog can confidently and calmly handle environments such as schools, hospitals, or other therapeutic settings.
  • BARK Uplift Certification Program: This is an advanced-level program unique to BARK Uplift. It builds on CGC and therapy training to prepare facility dogs for highly specialized tasks, such as providing emotional support, demonstrating adaptive behaviors, or assisting in unique environments.

Unlike traditional dog training, facility dog training emphasizes tasks that directly support their handlers’ needs in professional or therapeutic settings. Positive reinforcement techniques are integral to the process, ensuring the dogs remain confident, enthusiastic, and happy in their work. The result is not just a well-trained dog but a highly skilled professional companion capable of making a profound impact on the lives of those they serve.

  1. Custom Matching: Each dog is carefully matched with a professional or organization based on the unique needs of their environment. Our goal is to place these exceptional dogs where they can make the biggest impact, such as schools, firehouses, and police stations. These placements are chosen to ensure the dogs can provide the greatest support, whether it’s offering comfort to students, aiding first responders during high-stress situations, or engaging with the community in a meaningful way.

Currently, Christine Egbert, the CEO of BARK U, has donated several of her dogs to VIP Dog Training programs and Paws & Affection, where the dogs are now successfully working in environments where their specialized training continues to make a difference. By custom matching each dog, we guarantee that their skills align with the specific needs of their handlers, creating a seamless partnership that maximizes their potential to help others.

  1. Ongoing Support: BARK Uplift provides ongoing guidance and resources for the handlers and organizations working with facility dogs, ensuring long-term success for both the dog and their team.

BARK Uplift: Making a Difference
