Job Description

As a Training Apprentice at BARK U, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being, safety, and happiness of our canine guests. You will be responsible for escorting dogs safely during the check-in and check-out process, supervise their play during playtime, and support in maintaining a clean and organized environment for all dogs at BARK U.

In addition to dog handling and facility support, this role allows for individuals to partake in BARK U’s Training Apprenticeship program. As a Trainer Apprentice, you play a pivotal role in fostering positive dog behavior and enhancing the relationship between dogs and their owners through structured training programs. You will develop appropriate dog training skills under the supervision of a certified BARK U trainer, to develop your expertise in canine behavior and training techniques.

This structure allows for direct 1:1 interactions and handling of dogs while cultivating dog training techniques from onsite, certified professionals. 

Responsibilities:

  • Observe initial assessments of dogs to evaluate behavior, temperament, and training needs.
  • Support in development of personalized training plans tailored to address specific behavioral issues or obedience goals.
  • Teach basic obedience commands, ultimately advancing to more complex commands and behaviors tailored to individual dogs.
  • Learn to track and document progress during training sessions.
  • Monitor dogs during playtime to ensure safe and appropriate interactions.
  • Learn how to properly intervene in conflicts or behavioral issues.
  • Maintain awareness of dog behaviors and body language to prevent potential problems.
  • Prepare and distribute meals according to specific dietary requirements and schedules; document as required.
  • Engage dogs in physical activities and provide mental stimulation through enrichment activities, puzzles, or training exercises.
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene throughout the facility.
  • Report any signs of illness or injury to management and follow established procedures.

Requirements:

  • One year minimum of experience working in a dog boarding or daycare setting. 
  • CPDT certified or willing to obtain certification
  • Ability to handle and train dogs of various breeds, sizes, and temperaments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues.
  • Patience, compassion, and a genuine love for dogs and their well-being.
  • Work environment may vary, including private training sessions, group classes, or in-home consultations.
  • Physical demands include standing for extended periods, bending, and demonstrating training techniques.
  • Ability to remain calm and react quickly in stressful situations.
